Got chickens?  You should.  If you’ve got a backyard, try to get a flock of chickens, a great (probably the best) survival food.  Get “layer hens” that produce lots of eggs.  They will likely require feed in good times, but in a collapse with you keeping watch over them (coytoes love them too) you can let them free range, search for bugs for food.  Normally folks don’t bother having a rooster, and they do make the noise.   But if you want the ability to expand your flock in a collapse you do need one (two because of Murphy’s Law).  If your zoning bans chickens, consider talking to your neighbor, explaining why you want them, and defy the authorities.  You have a right to use your private property and stay alive.

MainText:- Backyard chickens are often heralded as the ultimate survival asset for individuals seeking self-sufficiency and resilience in uncertain times. Their importance stems from their multifaceted contributions to survival preparedness. Firstly, chickens provide a sustainable source of nutritious food, primarily through their eggs, which are rich in protein and essential nutrients. By maintaining a flock of layer hens, individuals can ensure a steady supply of fresh eggs, even in times of scarcity or disruption to food distribution networks. Moreover, chickens are adept foragers and can supplement their diet by scavenging for insects, weeds, and kitchen scraps, reducing reliance on store-bought feed. Their ability to convert kitchen waste into valuable protein further enhances their utility in a survival context.Beyond their role as food producers, backyard chickens offer additional benefits for survival scenarios. Their natural instincts make them effective pest controllers, helping to manage insect populations in the garden and reduce the risk of crop damage. Additionally, chickens can serve as early warning systems, alerting owners to potential threats or intruders with their vocalizations. In the event of a collapse or disruption to supply chains, the self-sufficiency afforded by backyard chickens becomes invaluable, providing a reliable source of food and livelihood when other resources may be scarce. However, it’s essential to consider the practicalities of keeping chickens, including housing, feeding, and protection from predators. While chickens are relatively low-maintenance compared to other livestock, they still require adequate shelter, access to clean water, and protection from extreme weather conditions. Additionally, zoning regulations and neighborhood restrictions may pose challenges for aspiring chicken owners, necessitating communication with neighbors and adherence to local ordinances. In summary, backyard chickens represent a versatile and resilient survival asset, offering food security, pest control, and early warning capabilities in times of crisis. By integrating chickens into their preparedness plans, individuals can enhance their self-sufficiency and resilience, ensuring a more sustainable future in the face of uncertainty.Â
